Replacing stator on motorcycle (Yamaha xj 550)?

Sunday, February 7th, 2010

Hey everyone… So I took the alternator apart and had to clean up the rotor but didn’t have to remove it. Getting nice resistance readings (ideal is 4.5 with 10% room for error) I am reading a consistant 4.8 ohms.
The stator tests good but now I can’t get the darned thing back in. I am sure if I really push or rubber mallet the thing to death I can get it back in but… it’s still a good stator and I want to keep it that way.
What is a good rule of thumb for getting the stator back in around the rotor and seated into the housing?
No gears to mesh. The stator is fixed while the rotor spins. The rotor has not moved since the stator has been pulled. I am thinking it is just a tight fit (as it was when I removed it)

Thanks for your replies to my question. It seems the alternator is at fault, so it needs to be changed. i guesight as well change the regulator while i’m at it. Does anyone have the relevant page of the workshop manual that they could scan and send to me please??.
Also please advise of any extra parts needed, i.e gaskets.

How do you charge the battery on a ‘93 Yamaha Seca motorcycle?

Sunday, August 16th, 2009

My friend just bought a Seca and the battery died on him today while he was riding it. Neither of us know much about bikes. Another friend of ours said it didn’t have an alternator and it would have to be charged by a quick charger, which seems like it would be a hastle. Do these bikes have an alternator? If not how do you charge them?
