I bought my motorcycle a few days ago. It’s a Yamaha XS250, 1982, and with 23,000 miles on the clock. The bike was in storage for 10 years before i bought it – the chrome is in good condition and the look of the bike concurs with the seller’s story.
I drove the motorcycle home with no issues and even stopped at a garage for petrol and was able to restart it easily. However, today I was totally unable to start the bike. The bike only has a kick-start, so I flicked on the choke, waited for the ignition light, and kick started. I tried this for 15 minutes this morning, and then fifteen minutes when I got back but no start. I hear the engine turn over but it doesn’t start.
I tried the horn and it wasn’t working either, so I figured it was something to do with the battery. I took it out to charge, but it was already 50% charged. I am charging it anyway, surely this would suggest this cannot be the problem.
I also wonder if the choke and the problems starting are linked. Since I got the motorcycle I was only able to ride the bike with full choke, but I presumed this was as the bike had been in storage so long. After 30 minutes of riding I would try cutting the choke and the engine would just die on me.
Other factors are that the oil was bone dry when I bought it and I had to drive it for 1.5 hours on the way home. I have since refilled the oil (the correct grade).
I am torn between it being a battery problem, an electrical problem, or a problem with the air/fuel balance.
Any advice is much appreciated as my mechanic can’t see the bike for a good week or so.
